このたび、ふげん社では8月20日(火)から31日(土)まで、Beatrix Fife個展“Abstraction”を開催します。ふげん社では1年ぶり3度目の個展です。

Beatrix Fife

English ver.

We will be holding the Beatrix Fife solo exhibition “Abstraction” from August 20 to 31. This is her third solo exhibition at Fugensha in three years.

Beatrix Fife is a painter from France and Norway, based in Tokyo.

In collaboration with her partner, Marki Katagiri, she works as a singer in the original French pop unit “Bix & Marki” and works on expressive activities like poetry and other forms of expression that transcend the boundaries of language, music and painting.

She is also a five-language speaker based on her experience of moving from one country to another, and by making the most of her ability, she also works as a language instructor at universities.

Abstract painting, for example using colors to ‘speak together’ and playing with boundaries of shapes and space, enables viewers to widen their imagination and to open up for other forms of perception. Feel free to express what you perceive when you see her works.

Also, as a guest artist, we will be showing a video by Walter Mirtl, a photographer and filmmaker from Austria who is close to Beatrix. Enjoy special collaborations with Beatrix’s paintings.

During the exhibition, there will be 3 events, the concert of “Bix & Marki”, an abstract drawing workshop by Beatrix, and the monthly “Art Salon” where Marki Katagiri (Bix&Marki) will present various aspects of music composition (rhythm, harmony, melody, image and sound) .

15: 00 ~ 17: 00 Opening Party

Bix & Marki:Bix&Marki, a duo of original acoustic soft jazz-French chansons, was created by Bix (Beatrix FIFE) and Marki(Mamoru KATAGIRI), when they came back to Japan after 10 years spent in Brussels, in the end of 2010.
After having graduated in jazz guitar from the Conservatoire R. de Bruxelles and played various kinds of jazz music, Marki started composing tunes with harmonies and rhythms adjusted to Beatrix’s lyrics, whispering voice and flute solos.
The French lyrics and the rhythm of the music and language, as well as the melodies, have a feeling of Japanese manga and French surrealism: in a contemporary way, being at the same time an insider and an outsider of the society,

■Profile

Beatrix Fife “Bix”

She spent her childhood in Rome with her English (partly Norwegian) father, who was raised in Italy, and her Norwegian mother, who was raised in England. She spoke three languages, Italian, English and Norwegian, since she was young. At the age of 7, her family moved to Paris and she went to French schools as well as studied music at the Conservatoire des Yvelines.

After graduating from high school in Paris, she entered a university in Oslo. She began painting and acting. She worked as an assistant for an off-Broadway production studio in New York and then studied painting in various ateliers in Paris, Oslo and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. In 1990, she went to Japan after winning a prize in an Austrian painting contest. She started as a language instructor in Kyoto and spent nine years doing exhibitions, music activities, dance and compose performances with videos.

In 1999, she moved to Belgium. She continued her painting and music activities while teaching languages, and studied jazz piano and jazz flute at the Brussels music academy. In 2002, she entered a Science of Language Master’s course  (majoring in research within Psycholinguistics, Dramatisation and Art) at the University of Franche-Comté in Besançon, France, and completed it in 6 years. The BLA language school was established by Beatrix and her husband Marki in Brussels.

In the summer of 2010, she moved back to Japan, where she started performing original French songs in the duo Bix & Marki. She currently works as a French part-time lecturer at the Institut Français in Tokyo, at Tokyo University Komaba, and at Waseda University. She is also fluent in Japanese.

The column “tape recorder” is being serialized on the Fugensha website. Written by Bix in French and then in English, translated to Japanese by Yukari Nakamura, the column is a biography of  Bix’  languages relating how she experienced the learning of languages from age 7 to 9.
