GOTO AKI

Born in Kawasaki, Japan in 1972. GOTO AKI holds a degree in Business Administration from Sophia University and studied photographic art at the Tokyo College of Photography. After traveling around the world from 1993 to 1994—a journey that took him to 56 countries—he shifted from a career in natural gas pipeline logistics at Marubeni Corporation to pursue photography. He studied under renowned photographers Kiyoshi Suzuki and Norio Kobayashi, whose influence shaped his approach of “thinking through photography.” Goto’s work primarily engages with natural landscapes across Japan, focusing not on surface depiction but on the internal structures, rhythms, and the vibrational interplay of light and color. His photographs explore a dynamic tension between visual autonomy and spiritual introspection.

His major works include the series and photobooks LAND ESCAPES, LAND ESCAPES FACE, and terra. In 2019, his solo exhibition terra at Canon Gallery S and the accompanying photobook (terra, AKAAKA Art Publishing) earned him the Newcomer’s Award from the Japan Photographic Society in 2020.
In recent years, he has been developing the long-term series Tabi-gori: Non-linear Landscapes, in which he walks and photographs ancient pilgrimage routes across the Kii Peninsula. In an era increasingly shaped by digital and AI technologies, his practice emphasizes embodied perception and the act of walking as a way of dialoguing with the land—seeking new photographic expressions rooted in physical experience.
He currently serves as Associate Professor at Nihon University College of Art.
